Garmin Connect 5.0 Updated, Positive or Negative?

Overview

 Garmin Connect 5.0 update introduces a significant redesign of the app’s homepage, aiming to enhance user experience. The feedback since the rollout has been varied, reflecting the substantial changes.

Key Changes

1, Homepage Redesign:

  • Old Layout: Featured a stacked data layout with full-width cards, each containing detailed stats.
  • New Layout: Divided into several sections to streamline information display.

2,Sections of the New Homepage:

  • Activity Summary: Displays today’s activities prominently at the top.
  • In Focus Section: Shows specific, detailed data points such as training readiness, training status, body battery, and weekly activity summaries. This section helps users prioritize important metrics.
  • At a Glance Section: Contains smaller cards, showing four to six metrics at a time depending on the screen size. These cards provide a snapshot of various stats but with less detail than the In Focus section.
  • Yesterday’s Stats: Summarizes the previous day’s activities and metrics, including body battery, sleep, calories, and heart rate.
  • Last Seven Days: Offers a summary of various stats from the past week, providing a broader view of trends and patterns.

3,User Experience and Customization:

  • The new design aims to present “more of what matters” to users, making the experience more tailored to individual goals.
  • The In Focus section, while useful for prioritizing data, has limited customizable fields. It includes metrics like body battery, training readiness, and workout trends but lacks options for displaying calories, HRV status, or weight.
  • The At a Glance section is more similar to the old layout and can show a variety of information side-by-side.
  • Users can hide the In Focus section to see more data at once in the At a Glance section, making the display less overwhelming and more comprehensive.

4,Feedback and Suggestions:

  • Constructive feedback from users is encouraged to help Garmin improve the app. Users are prompted to provide specific reasons for their likes or dislikes.
  • Suggestions for improvement include:
  • Introducing a quick summary at the top of the screen to show multiple important stats simultaneously.
  • Allowing more customization options similar to the previous version, where users could choose from a wide range of stats.
  • Shortening the In Focus section to make room for more data on the homepage.

5, Desktop Version:

  • The desktop version of Garmin Connect mirrors the layout chosen on the smartphone app but with all sections visible without needing to swipe.
  • There is potential for better utilization of the desktop’s larger screen real estate, suggesting that simply mirroring the app layout might not be the best approach.

6, Overall Impression:

  • Garmin has made significant efforts to cater to a diverse audience, from casual health trackers to professional athletes. This broad user base creates challenges in prioritizing and organizing the vast amount of data available.
  • The update reflects Garmin’s attempt to balance these needs, but further refinement and user feedback are necessary to fully realize its potential.

The article concludes with an encouragement for users to share their thoughts and suggestions to help Garmin continue improving the app. The new Garmin Connect 5.0 offers a more personalized experience, but its success will depend on ongoing adjustments and user input.

Thaughts collected from users

If it’s not broken, don’t fix it. The old version with the collapsed list view gave a really nice and fast overview of all the important metrics. Now in version 5 there is no overview and you have to scroll up and down and left and right to see what you could see in one page before. Please let us have version 4 back.

@butrol6939

Garmin should fire the UI design team and rebuild it 😄

@yz113

Just terrible. How can I go back to the previous version??

@turner1957

I think Garmin should allow users the option to select the old style home page in the settings menu – so those that enjoy the new interface can use it and those that don’t can continue using the old version they are used to

@adobemadesimple

I really really wish I could have unlimited “at a glance” cards on the home screen. Why would they limit it, that extra tap is so annoying.

@miaisonyt

I would be curious to hear what made Garmin decide to change the UI in the first place? Was there a large percentage of people complaining about it or was it just to ‘update’ the look? I was very happy with the old layout and still prefer it over the new one. A simple option to go back to the old look is all we want.
