The history of Breitling—- the Premier Heritage pays tribute to Breitling’s founding action team
Three generations have changed the history of timekeeping instruments and made Breitling what it is today. Léon Breitling founded the brand in 1884; he then patented the simple chronograph/tachymeter, which could measure any speed between 15 and 150 km/h. This invention was featured in the 1906 Vitesse pocket watch.
In 1915, his son Gaston added a separate push-piece at 2 o’clock to a chronograph. This innovation separated the start, pause and reset functions from the crown, making it more practical for sports timekeeping. Willy, grandson of Lyon, patented a second independent chronograph push-piece at 4 o’clock in 1934. One of Willy Breitling’s most admired pioneering achievements was the creation of the “Huit Aviation Flight Department” in 1938.
The history of the first premier
In addition to his courage and technical mastery, Willy Breitling was aware of the public’s desire for elegance and glamour, and in the 1940s, when he designed the original Premier, Breitling took the first step towards linking purpose with style. As Willy saw it: “When a man wears a watch, the watch clearly becomes the seal of his taste for elegance.”
